Ignorance and Innocence

“Ignorance is bliss.” This statement, though it may sound very good and true, can actually be very dangerous. That is because ignorance does not change the facts. It may seem very nice at times to be ignorant so that way you don’t have to deal with challenging thoughts or take action. Following are three scenarios to illustrate that ignorance can be a very dangerous, even fatal, thing.
Situation one: You have cancer. (This could apply to other diseases, as well.) Ignorance may be easier at the time since you wouldn’t have to think about dying, you wouldn’t have to think about all the what-ifs, and you wouldn’t have to decide on and go through treatment. However, ignorance almost certainly means death. Would you rather be ignorant of the fact that you had cancer? Would you say then that ignorance is bliss?
Situation two: Babies are being killed by abortion. Ignorance may seem good in this situation since you wouldn’t have to face the reality of this horrible tragedy, you wouldn’t have to think about what God wants you to do, and you wouldn’t have to do anything. However, ignorance means death for these children. Would you rather be ignorant of the fact that babies are being murdered all around you? Is ignorance really bliss?
Situation three: Jesus is coming back to judge the world. Ignorance may be easier right now since you wouldn’t have to face your standing with God, you wouldn’t have to repent, and you wouldn’t have to think about eternity without Christ. However, ignorance means death – eternal death. Would you rather be ignorant of the fact that Jesus is coming back to judge everyone? Will you still say that ignorance is bliss?
The Bible does say that we are to be innocent. While ignorance is not bliss, innocence is a good thing. We are not to be wise and knowledgeable in the ways of this world. “. . . I want you to be wise in what is good and innocent in what is evil.” ~ Romans 16:19. Another sense of the word innocent is used in the following verse, meaning harmless or gentle: “Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves; so be shrewd as serpents and innocent as doves.” ~ Matthew 10:16
Ignorance is not bliss, because ignorance does not change the facts. Ignorance only blinds you to imminent death.

I absolutely agree with you Anna. I know so many people who try to claim ignorance...when it is so deadly! This was a very powerful post. I really liked it.

I remember a time in the not-so-distant past when I thought that ignorance was bliss. But now I can't think of any time when ignorance is bliss, only innocence. Thank you for your sweet comment!
